Harvest report

Tu built an expanded garden for me, because the existing one is just too small! We dug up the existing sod and broke it up, then put up a 5' fence and spread Lowes topsoil on the new areas. I planted Fava beans (sweet Lorane) and triticale from Seeds of Change in the new areas for cover crops.

This year's harvest:
  • Spring plants -- peas, lettuce -- grew well, but I started them too late so the harvest was small. Need to be sure to plant on time (Feb.) next year. The chives grew well, but they got plowed under when expanding the garden. Scallions grew from seed, but never got large enough to harvest.
  • Chiles did well in pots. I need to be careful to transplant them as soon as they get big enough. Fruit production was vastly increased by adding organic fertilizer. Also, I think the bell peppers need bigger pots or should be in the ground. The other peppers are probably okay to be in the pots again.
  • Basil plants did well amongst the tomatoes.
  • Edamame, borage, and melon all grew well, but all need to be supported more next year.
  • Ditto for the green beans and cucumbers. Need serious vertical supports.
  • Tomatoes, once again, didn't have a great harvest. I need to get them in the ground earlier (they were a little late this year) and be sure to mulch. Also, probably try to stick with cherry/pear/roma tomatoes.
