Obviously the soil needs amending, because neither the basil nor marigold seeds sprouted. I also purchased some marigold plants from Potted Plant, but they died too. The chiles are doing okay, but they needed staking. Also, they aren't as tall or as fruitful as Stefanie's plants. I guess this is due to poor soil quality.
The tomatoes are okay. They grew very tall -- probably 6-7 feet. I think they need more regular water than I give them (since I hardly ever water them), but I did put a layer of mulch down around them which has really helped with the weeds. The roma plant is producing lots of good tomatoes, and the yellow boy plant occasionally produces some, but the other too are more difficult. I have problems with splitting, and they just don't seem to produce as much as the others. Hopefully better soil will help with this problem too.
As for the peas and lettuce and onions:
onions were a waste. They didn't grow very big and they take up a lot of room . Don't think I'll try those again. The peas were nice to have and pretty easy to grow. Lettuce was great, but I think the soil quality also limited its growth. Will definitely try lettuce again, but need to work on building a raised bed with better soil.
