Black Simpson lettuce is wonderful! Looks and tastes great, grows well. Some other varieties, possibly from the Mesclun mix, are also good. Haven't seen much in the way of Bibb lettuce. Either I can't recognize it or it didn't grow. I planted the lettuce in rows, which seems to work well. We started harvesting lettuce in early May.
The peas are crazy! They have grown to about 4 feet as of mid-May. We supported them by inserting bamboo sticks through the fencing horizontally. However, we were probably a little late putting in some of the taller supports because the plants are clumped together as they get higher. Next time, I need to keep on top of the staking. Looks like it's important to get the stakes in early, before the plants appear to need them.
Onions seem to be growing well. They all have tall green stalks. I have no idea when to harvest them. They require a bit more space than I had planned on, so next year they'll need more room.
